Damascus knife by Ugrik Damascus knife by Ugrik
Hehei

It has been so long since i posted my last knife. I hope there will be many to follow as i have lots of beautiful blades forged and ready.

Blade is forged from damasteel - stainless powdermettalurgic damascus steel made in sweden. From my experience its definitely most difficult material to forge but well worth the effort. Etched pattern has great contrast and the blade can be honed incredibly sharp and it holds its edge very well - quite unusual characteristics for stainless steels.
Handle is made from cast brass fitting and piece of Australian hardwood i picked up near Cairns, QLD. Somewhat urnes stile engraving on the handle features three animals eating eachother and themselves in good viking fashion. Final finish was made using schellac and linseed oil.

How can it be Damascus's Steel if its made in Sweden? The technique to make this type of steel has another name, that I kindly forgot.

The fact that you would forget something like this would suggest that you should take much more humble aproach to the subject.

The technique is pattern welding and result is called damascene steel but also various other names. Damasteel is a Swedish company that makes damascene steels. Now go and read the description again ;)

This is one truly amazing blade, as all in your gallery.

/Reads other commentaries.

So, pay well enough for a blade? Hmmmm.

Could I know how much is well enough?

It's gorgeous, but the pattern on the wood looks more Celtic than viking...

:iconugrik:

Maybe because theres huge viking influence in celtic art since they practically owned the place for few centuries. If you look for most awesome samples of viking knotwork google Urnes Stave Church - its unbelievably beautiful :P

I especially love the patterns on the blade, is that the light or is that actually in the blade?

Thanx - what you see are different layers of two types of steel - one is acid resistant and other is not and so when etched in acid the layers become visible.

Thanx. Im surprised you mention it - the blade balances out exactly at the point where brass fitting and wooden handle meet - so in the center of the index finger if you hold it.

:iconpaxalot:
Paxalot Featured By Owner Feb 4, 2011
Wow, that takes skill to do. It would be a good throwing knife.
Reply
:iconugrik:
Ugrik Featured By Owner Feb 4, 2011
Not really - the wooden handle would splinter and brake eventually. For throwingknives solid or nearly solid full tang is a must have. Personally i dont like fulltang knives much so i rarely make them

That's a great design, a very nice decorative knife overall. Can you give us the website of this place in Sweden? I'd like to see what else they've been able to accomplish, since they're obviously very skilled in forging.

Thanx. Its a company that specializes in making quality steels - they have very little to do with forging or smithwork but if you want to buy some steel you pretty much cant get better. [link]
