Lernaean Hydra by Ugrik Lernaean Hydra by Ugrik
It's my entry for *ArtisanCraft's greek/roman contest

Lernaean Hydra - another poor creature, who lived his life far from humans beneath a lake trying to keep mortals away from gates to underworld, slain by brute Hercules who committed a mass-murder among rare and mythical creatures. Have you ever wondered why we don't have such wonderful beasts wandering around? Its because of those so called "heros"! How can any creature stand up to the demigod? Its totally unfair... :(

Blade is made from Böhler steel and is 13 cm long. Overall length is 24,5 cm. Heads and necks are carved and cut out and details are acid-etched (approximately 18% HNO3). Fitting is casted bronze. Handle is from basswood burl and its stabilized with epoxy resin - to give it strength and durability and also to color it a bit (i added a bit of dark-blue pigment to the resin) to give it more interesting look. I'm very satisfied from the outcome.

PS - sorry for possible grammatical errors :D

Is it made of inox?

I thought You should know that I featured this picture in the article at: https:// mythoblogy.com/hydra
I hope You don't mind, please check and confirm if that's okay with You.

Hehei!

Its ok -the blade was made from stenco-leuku steel. I dont use stainless steels apart from some very sophisticated stainless damascus steels from sweeden.

Are you ever going to do anything related to Slavic or Baltic mythology?

Im estonian so im not very familiar with baltic and slavic mythology. There are some overlap but Finnic tribes have quite unique mythology. There are more ties to Nordic mythology - according to early christian chronicles estonians worshiped Thara or Taara and called for his aid in battle - which can be connected to Thor in Scandic myhology.

as well as an overlap between the Nordic Loki and the Finnic Louhi.

What type of tools do you use to carve the designs? a dremel or hand tools? Fantastic work.

Various different tools but "dremel" with different ends does lots of the work.

Very interesting effects on the basswood! The etching is of corse fantastic but the effects on the wood are so bold. They really stand out to me.

Woodgrain in this handle is enhanced by slightly blue tinted epoxy. Ofcource the grain itself was magnificent on its own right aswell.

but i must ask, did you weave cords together then attach it to the blade? or did you take the knife and carve the hydra out of it?

I made it myseld from scratch but further explanation would be very long. You might want to read a bit about knifemaking and you are able to ask much better more detailed questions. :)

Out of curiosity, how much does cutting into the blade to make designs weaken it?
Reply
:iconugrik:

I cant put it to words right now but it is as strong as the area of the smallest crosscut. I make my blades usually 4-7mm thick depending on the size so it should leave enough material. Heattreating is also very important.

uh-huh ok. I'm just curious.
I love weapons and I always wanted to have my own master sword from the game "legend of zelda". You know it maybe?
There are many master swords in ebay for selling but I'm not sure if the quality is good. But I don't think I have enough money to pay you for the sword though. A few hundred bucks don't cover the work you put in.
If you'd do the sword at all...

I do swords but custom made sword is very costly. I think i would start considering making one for about 1000 euros if it has to be combat capable weapon

yeah as I thought. It's costly of course and I'm still an apprentice so I cannot pay you the money =/
But now I know where I canask for commissions in future ;D
